Gurnet Holding Co.

Backing exceptional operators to build enduring market leaders.

Gurnet Holding Co. partners with owner-operators who have built exceptional companies and believe the next chapter can be substantially larger. We bring capital, acquisition capability and transaction experience. You bring the operating expertise that actually builds the business.

What we believe

The operator is the scarce asset.

Capital is widely available. So is advice. What is rare is a person who has worked out how to recruit, train, price, sell and lead in a specific industry, and who has proved it by building a company that customers and employees choose over the alternatives.

That knowledge usually stays inside one company. We think it is often capable of a great deal more.

Most owners are told the logical next step is to sell and step away. Sometimes that is right. But when someone is still competitive, still building, and can describe exactly what a much larger version of the business would look like, leaving is a strange conclusion. The better question is what that person could build with more capital, a real acquisition capability and a longer time horizon behind them.

What a partnership can unlock

Capital and transaction capability, applied to your playbook.

  1. 01

    Capital

Funding for growth, acquisitions and the investments that are difficult to make out of current cash flow, alongside liquidity for you if that is part of what you want.

  2. 02

    Acquisitions

Sourcing, evaluating, negotiating, financing and closing complementary businesses. This is the work we have done professionally, and it is where we are most useful.

  3. 03

    Organic growth

Support for new locations, new services and added capacity, with the patience for investments that take several years to earn out.

  4. 04

    Talent and infrastructure

Help recruiting leadership and building the finance, reporting and systems a considerably larger organization requires.

  5. 05

    Strategic partnership

A direct thought partner on capital allocation, organizational design and the decisions that determine what the business becomes. You continue to run the company.

We are deliberately clear about what we are: a capital and transaction partner, not a large institution with a department for each of these. Where we do not have something in-house, we help our partners access it.

Time horizon

Built for the next chapter, not the next transaction.

We are not trying to buy a company, hold it briefly and sell it to the next fund. We are interested in businesses that compound: through people, organic growth, disciplined acquisitions and continued investment.

Structure follows the situation rather than a template. A partnership might be growth capital, a majority or minority investment, a recapitalization that takes meaningful money off the table while you retain a significant stake, or a larger platform built around the company you already run.

What matters more than the form is that the economics reflect who creates the value. Operating partners should own a meaningful share of what gets built next.

Who we partner with

We expect to do very few of these. The person matters more than the financial criteria.

  1. 01

    Proven builders

You have built a company that is clearly better than its competitors, and you can explain precisely why.

  2. 02

    Ambition

You believe the next decade can be considerably larger than the last, and you want to be the one who builds it.

  3. 03

    Growth minded

You see real opportunity in expansion and acquisition, not only in optimizing what already exists.

  4. 04

    Culture driven

You care about your employees, your customers and your reputation, and you would not hand the company to someone who did not.

  5. 05

    Long-term oriented

You want meaningful ownership in what comes next rather than a clean exit.

About

LinkedIn

Gurnet Holding Co. was founded by Collin van der Veen to partner with exceptional operators and build enduring businesses.

Collin began his career in investment banking at Goldman Sachs and worked in investing and acquisitions at CrossHarbor Capital Partners before leaving institutional finance to invest independently. He is also the founder of Gurnet Real Estate Group, where he has sourced, underwritten, financed and closed multifamily acquisitions across New England.

Gurnet is early, and we would rather say so than imply otherwise. There is no portfolio of national operating companies behind this page. What there is: real transaction and capital experience, a clear view of how a partnership should work, and the intention to build something substantial with a small number of exceptional operators.

Thinking bigger about what you have built?

If you are an operator considering the next stage of your company, I would welcome a confidential conversation. There is no process and no obligation. I am comfortable spending time on a relationship that may not turn into anything for a long while, or at all.
